First Visit

The pediatric dental team at Michael J. Leach, D.D.S. Pediatric Dentistry creates a fun and exciting environment for the kids in Cumming, GA! While our office is focused on serving infants, children, and adolescents, we take into account the experience that parents have as well.

Prior to arriving at your first visit, our team will ask that you complete all of the necessary paperwork via our online portal located on our website. When completed, all paperwork is encrypted and emailed directly to our office and added to your child’s chart. Arriving at your child’s first appointment will be accompanied by a sense of relaxation, knowing that you have chosen the best pediatric dentist for your child.

Being nervous about going to the dentist is a normal response, but you can assure your child that there is nothing to be nervous about. Honey, our therapy dog, will be in the office and can lie with your child during their appointment if they wish! Additionally, you and your child can take a  virtual tour of our office to see how fun and kid-friendly it is.

Our team uses fun, kid-friendly wording when discussing procedures and tools, i.e. Mr. Slurpee, wiggle teeth, etc. We also use “Show and Tell” to help ease anxiety/nervousness. Our team will show your child all of the tools that will be used during their appointment and describe what each one does using those kid-friendly phases. Your child is allowed to touch and feel the tools and ask whatever questions they might have!

How often should your child visit the dentist?

Attending a regularly scheduled dental health check-up helps to maintain healthy teeth and gums. The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry and Michael J. Leach, DDS Pediatric Dentistry recommends your child visit the dentist two times a year starting after their first dental health check-up, which usually takes place around the age of three years.

If your child has braces, our pediatric dentist office serving Cumming will recommend that they attend cleaning appointments every 3 months to ensure plaque and tartar buildup do not occur.

why should you choose a pediatric dentist?

Pediatric dentists are specialists in treating the unique needs of children. A pediatric dentist has completed an additional two to three years of specialty training beyond dental school.

Dr. Leach completed three additional years of training at the Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh focusing on caring for children of all ages and abilities!

A pediatric dentist specifically treats the oral health needs of infants and children through adolescence, including those with special health needs. Pediatric dentists are skilled at using smaller equipment designed for a child’s mouth and better understand the intricacies and importance of baby teeth in a growing child. They also focus more attention on educating patients and parents about preventive care to help children avoid complications such as decay, infection, speech problems, and cosmetic issues.

The difference at dr. leach’s pediatric dentist office

Private Practice

The staff in a private practice is a huge difference. We don’t have staff turnover that happens frequently. We have people who have been here over 26 years like Ms. Shannon, and people who recently came on board in the past year to help with marketing.

We have a variety of people who have been here, but our goal when hiring is to employ them for the long term so that when your kids come, they see the same faces over and over which builds a familiarity with the office. Therefore, the children become more comfortable at future visits. That’s a part of our mission, so it’s not different faces and people every time they come.

Sole Practitioner

In Dr. Leach’s eyes, a sole practitioner means being the doctor that you are going to see when you come to our office to get your teeth cleaned or to get a filling done. Your child will not be seeing one dentist one time and another dentist the next time. By having one dentist, it allows for continuity of care. Being a pediatric sole practitioner means focusing on the best interest of the child. Dr. Leach does this by getting to know the parents and the kids, and welcoming them as part of our dental family.

Taking the time to talk to every parent at each visit is very important because it keeps them in the know and fully partnered with our dental team in his/her child’s dental health journey. It’s really cool getting to see the kids grow up. Having this type of relationship with our patients and their parents allows Dr. Leach to joke with the parents and say that the kids are getting older, but he isn’t. Having patients who have been a part of our practice for 14, 15, even 16 years has allowed us to watch our patients grow up and to be a part of their incredible stories.

Our previous patients value Dr. Leach’s practice philosophy so much that they are beginning to bring their children which is resulting in us seeing a second generation of patients!

Conservative Treatment Approach

Dr. Leach has built his practice on the idea that good dental treatment does not have to be aggressive or priced to break the bank. His pediatric dental office in Alpharetta offers a conservative approach to treatment for the youth in Cumming, GA. As Dr. Leach ensures parents, “If I would not perform the treatment on my own child, then I am not going to suggest you have the treatment done on your child.”. This empathetic demeanor provides comfort for parents of all ages in knowing that their child is receiving the best dental care possible.

The practice philosophy at Michael J. Leach, D.D.S. Pediatric Dentistry is built on a preventative  dentistry approach which means treatment will only be recommended if it is absolutely necessary to maintain optimal dental health for your child. One of the main approaches that our office takes in regards to preventative dentistry is establishing a dental home for your child around the time of their first birthday. Starting the routine of visiting the dentist at such an early age has been determined by the ADA and the AAPD to reduce the number of restoration appointments needed. Which means less time in the dental chair for your child and less money spent on dental work for you, the parent.

Trust your child’s dental health to a board certified pediatric dentist who has the best interest of your child’s oral health in mind.
